8 Unique Engagement Rings Designed In New Zealand
While it was the year of the oval cut solitaire diamond engagement ring in yellow gold, at Four Words we are seeing a rise in couples looking to create something that is classic but unique. Below are our favourite.
Want to design your own unique engagement ring with lab grown diamonds and gemstones, and exquisite craftsmanship? You can book an appointment and come and see us in our Auckland studio, or via a video call with our designer.
Custom Cut Green Sapphire with Asymmetrical Accenting Diamonds
This ring oozes two trends that we are seeing at Four Words — custom cut gemstones and asymmetrical designs. And why not? Engagement rings should be a statement and reflect everything about your relationship.
It features an elongated hexagonal cut green sapphire in full bezel with three accenting round brilliant cut lab grown diamonds on one side and an emerald cut lab grown diamond on the other. This is all held together by 14K yellow gold. This unique style is a showstopper and inevitable to be the envy of your friends.
We believe our jewellers will be busier than ever as rings like this will become more popular as we see a return to the art deco style in 2024 with custom cut gemstones, acute angles and asymmetry.
Cushion Cut Lilac-Blue Sapphire with Accenting hexagonal Cut Lab Grown Diamonds
This unique engagement ring is a sign of things to come. We are noticing a rise in bespoke lilac sapphire engagement rings. Chunky and blingy rings are also making a comeback. This is because a lot of customers are going for larger carat sizes. This ring features a total 3.5 carats.
If you love this ring but want an ice cool finish, you could change the band from yellow gold to white gold or platinum. If you want to contrast the cool colours of the gemstones with a warm band, rose gold could also be a good option.
When you work with Four Words, you can choose the exact gemstone colour and shape — even if that is a custom cut.
1.5 Carat Oval Teal Sapphire with Accenting Round Cut Lab Grown Diamonds
Coloured stones are having a moment — to the point that the diamonds are now the accenting stones as opposed to the other way around. Deeper in colour to the ring above, this engagement ring could also be done in aquamarine, morganite or amethyst. It could also be done in a different shape such as a marquise cut or pear cut. This ring would also pair well with a flush wedding ring.
If you can think it, you can make it with Four Words. We have a wide range of lab grown diamonds and gemstones in our showroom and if there is a particular gemstone that you are after, we can source it for you.
2 Carat Asscher Cut Champagne Moissanite on a 14K Thick Yellow Gold Band
If classic but unique is more your style, this high profile 2 carat Asscher cut champagne moissanite in a thick yellow band may just fit the bill.
Not many people know about coloured diamonds or moissanites, and they are often fashioned in cocktail rings. But with lab grown diamonds and moissanites making them more accessible, we are seeing coloured diamonds and moissanites in engagement rings. Yellows and pinks are our favourite.
Not all jewellers in New Zealand work with coloured diamonds or moissanites because it requires special skills to choose the best ones. At Four Words, we are one of the very few jewellers that are comfortable to do so, and we have crafted lots of coloured diamond and moissanite engagement and cocktail rings — so much so we have written articles to help you and other jewellers to choose the best ones.
6 Stone Pink Sapphire Wedding Ring
While not an engagement ring, we absolutely love this wedding ring. This pink sapphire set features six asymmetrical pink diamonds featuring ovals and round brilliant cut diamonds each in different sizes making a comfort-fit diamond band. Each pink sapphire is held together by three prongs. This could also be done in a pink diamond set.
This wedding ring is part of a his and her wedding band set. The men’s wedding ring features an angled positioned emerald blue sapphire in rose gold. This ring set is perfect for those that want to capture their love story in classic but unique way.
Toi et Moi Heart Cut Moissanite Engagement Ring
This unique engagement ring features two heart cut moissanites on a curved thin yellow gold band. Heart cut gemstones are incredibly rare and we have only done three heart cut engagement rings in four years. And this is the first toi et moi we have done that features a heart cuts too.
At Four Words we can custom cut heart diamonds or gemstones, or any other shape you fancy to make sure you get the exact proportions and brilliance that you are looking for.
2 Carat Round Brilliant Cut Diamond Solitaire with a Diamond Halo in White Gold
If you love an ice white finish, this diamond engagement ring features a twist on a classic. Starting with the foundation of a Tiffany engagement ring, it features a 2 carat round cut diamond solitaire enveloped by a diamond halo finished off in a white gold ring.
2 Carat Round Brilliant Cut Lilac Sapphire Featuring 6 Accenting Lab Grown Diamonds
From a design perspective, this ring may not seem that unique. But it is the gemstone that makes this ring so special. It features a lilac sapphire — a gemstone that is translucent in natural light. Instead of being sparkly or deep in colour, it has more of an 'ocean' effect where it feels like you are looking into the depth of the gemstone itself.
Your unique engagement ring doesn't need to be the be all and end all of showing off your design taste. You can customise other pieces of jewellery and add it to your wishlist such as your wedding ring, infinity band, stud earrings or pendants. And if you are thinking of affordable gemstones, alexandrites, tourmaline and aquamarine also do come to mind.

Common Questions
Engagement ring styles are a personal choice that differs from couple to couple. In New Zealand, 2023 has seen the classic solitaire style remain popular. Multi-stone and antique styles are also continuing to rise in popularity.
More couples are choosing alternative materials for their engagement rings, including rose gold for the metal and stones like emerald and sapphire.
However, 2023's biggest trends are using sustainable gemstones and creating custom engagement rings. Lab-grown gemstones offer a high-quality, sustainable, low-cost alternative to mined gemstones. Saving money on the diamond can open the door to investing in custom engagement ring designs.
